On October 23, 2015, Heritage Elementary received a recorded message threatening the school. School personnel immediately called the Avon Police Department and followed our safety plan. Students were evacuated to a safe location, per the safety plan, and remained there while safety forces swept the building for any potential threat. No threat was found.
Based on the time of day this occurred, students did not return to the building and were dismissed from the safe location. Thank you to our parents/guardians for their patience as we asked everyone to sign their student(s) out before taking them home.
I want to say 'thank you' to everyone who assisted in the implementation of the safety plan. Thank you to our staff, who quickly accounted for the students during the evacuation and for providing support to our students. Thank you to our safety forces and city officials, including Mayor Bryan Jensen, for providing immediate support. Thank you to our Transportation Department for adjusting to the unusual dismissal. And finally, thank you to our parents\guardians for their patience and understanding as we managed this difficult situation.
We have spent time this week debriefing and receiving feedback about the situation to recognize what went well and what we may want to adjust. This included meeting with our safety forces and staff.
Our students' safety is, and will always be our first priority.
