Welcome to the start of another busy week at Heritage Elementary. Here are a few updates of some upcoming events to look forward to in the building:
Please note, report cards were sent home with students today (January 22nd).
Information will be coming home shortly to parents regarding the scheduling of spring conferences. So you are aware, spring parent/teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, February 18th and Thursday, February 25th, from 3:15-7:00.
Next week, many of the parents of our third, fourth, and fifth graders will receive a Written Education Plan (WEP) form in the U.S. mail. This form is part of a gifted reporting procedure that was enacted for all schools last year to notify parents if a student was identified by state criteria as having gifted ability in any specific academic area. The letter will denote if your child received an academic score on the Second Grade Terra Nova in the 95%ile or higher. In second grade, each student was administered this test, which included a reading, math, science, and social studies exam, as well as a CSI (Cognitive Screen Index Score). The CSI score is similar to an IQ measure. For students to be included in the Avon Gifted Program, students must meet the following criteria: they must have a CSI score of 130 or higher plus two scores in the 95%ile (one of which must be reading or math). The students that meet these criteria receive the pull-out gifted services from Mrs. Tuck in third or fourth grade, or with Mrs. Shuder in fifth grade. The students who have received these forms in the mail qualify as gifted in either reading or math, but do not qualify for the full program because they have not met the full identification criteria. The main purpose of these new forms is to notify the parents that their child is considered gifted by the state criteria in one particular area and to outline how the classroom teacher plans to differentiate instruction and provide opportunities for enrichment for the identified students in these areas within the classroom. Once again, these notifications will be sent out next week to the parents of qualifying students.
ONCE THE WEATHER REACHES THE Mid-30’S, STUDENTS WILL BE RETURNING OUTDOORS FOR RECESS. TO HELP CLARIFY A FEW QUESTIONS WE’VE RECEIVED, WIND CHILL IS FACTORED INTO THE DECISION WHETHER TO GO OUTSIDE OR REMAIN INDOORS. THE CURRENT TEMPERATURE AT 10:15 AM EACH MORNING WILL DETERMINE THE WHETHER OR NOT WE HAVE INDOOR OR OUTDOOR RECESS. OF COURSE, I DO NOT EXPECT THAT WE WILL BE OUTSIDE FOR RECESS DURING THE EARLY PART OF NEXT WEEK!
Please remember, the deadline to order school yearbooks is fast approaching. The order deadline is Friday, February 5th.
Each classroom has been promoting a special contest from noted children’s book author, Jan Brett. The school or library that has the most parents, teachers, friends, or supporters who enter the contest will win a free school visit from Jan Brett during the 2016-17 school year. The contest will end on April 4th. Each class is trying hard to have every student and parent enter the contest to hopefully win the visit from this author. To help us out, please visit http://www.janbrett.com/contest_2016/2016_free_school_or_library_visit.htm and enter “Heritage” for the school and “35575 Detroit Road” for the address.
Second Reminder for 5th Grade Parents:
As you know, the fifth graders are nearing the process of scheduling for next year (Grade 6). You may have some questions about what to expect when your child enters Avon Middle School. In order to assist you in this transition, we would encourage you to attend an AMS Parent Information Meeting which we have scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 2, 2016, in the Avon Heritage ES (North Gymnasium). The meeting will last about 45 minutes and will address the following items: philosophy, goals, expectations, orientations, scheduling, educational and extracurricular opportunities, Open House, opportunities, success in school, and further discussion.
We would recommend that you place this date on your calendar. Please keep in mind that this meeting is for parents, not for students. Incoming students will have an opportunity to receive their information in late August during their Orientation. If you have any questions, please call us at 934-3800. In the event of school closings due to inclement weather, this meeting will be rescheduled. We hope to see you at 7:00 p.m. on - Avon Heritage Elementary School!
Thanks for your time and attention to this newsletter.
