Welcome back to the start of another week at Heritage South. Thanks to everyone for their help in preparing the students for the OAA and PARCC tests last week. Early this week, we hope to have completed all of the make-up tests for students who were absent during the week of testing.
One of the highlights of this week will be the 2015 Heritage South Spelling Bee. The bee will feature two finalists from each of the 28 homerooms in 3rd and 4th grade, plus an alternate speller from each class. The spelling bee will be this Tuesday, at 6:00 in the Heritage South Gymnasium.
This upcoming Friday (May 1st), interim reports will be sent home to any student who currently have a “D” or “F” in any academic area. As a reminder, you can always check your child’s academic progress by logging onto the Progress Book program.
Information will be coming home shortly regarding “Right to Read Week”, which will take place during the week of May 18th. This week will feature many literacy themed events in the classroom and a special assembly. Noted local children’s book author Shelley Pearsall will present a series of assembilies to the students on Tuesday and Wednesday of the week of May 18th. The students will also be reading to area seniors at local nursing homes in Avon, Avon Lake, and Westlake. Permission slips will be heading home shortly.
We would like to congratulate all of the classes at Heritage South for their active participation in the “Light It Up Blue” drive for Autism awareness. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, the school has collected over $1,000 for this very worthy cause.
Attached to this newsletter, you will find a flyer for a free “Techie Camp”. Earlier this year, I sent out this flyer. We are happy to share that the deadline has been extended to this upcoming Friday, May 1st. “Techie Camp” is a full-day, week long technology experience designed specifically for elementary students. Students who sign up for this free camp can select to either attend the “Programming” or “Robotics” sessions. To be considered for these opportunities, please print out the attached Application Packet and return it via mail or fax to Nordson Tech Camps in Columbus.
As mentioned in previous newsletters, I will try my best to honor any parent request regarding classroom teachers next year, however due to the bulk of requests I expect to receive, I cannot guarantee placements. If you wish to make a request for your child’s classroom teacher, I kindly ask that you send me an email or letter with your request no later than Friday, May 15th. I need to impose this deadline to enable me to start working on the class lists during the latter stages of the school year. This process does take a great deal of time due to numerous special programs that many students are given. It is incredibly helpful to share with me the names of 2-3 teachers you would like to request for your child next year, or more importantly, let me know if there is a classroom you would like avoided.
Thank you for your time and attention to this newsletter. Have a great weekend!
